About the 2009–2014 Expedition
The third-generation Expedition — Ford’s U324 — is body-on-frame with a fully boxed chassis and independent rear suspension, sold in standard and long-wheelbase Expedition EL form. What defines the 2009–2014 run is the powertrain: the 5.4L Triton three-valve V8 paired with the 6R80 six-speed automatic, which replaced the 6R75 fitted to the 2007 and 2008 trucks. That pairing carried through to the end of the generation, and 2015 is where it stops — the fourth-generation Expedition dropped the Triton for the 3.5L EcoBoost and is a different manual entirely. If your truck has the 5.4 and the six-speed, this is the documentation written for it.

- 5.4L rattle and rough idle from oscillating cam timing — Ford’s technical service bulletin 12-7-10 applies to the 2005–2012 Expedition and Navigator with the 5.4L 3V: an intermittent rattle and rough idle once the engine reaches operating temperature, traced to oscillating cam timing, with both variable camshaft timing oil control solenoids replaced as the remedy. Section 303-01 (Engine — 5.4L 3V) and Section 303-14 (Electronic Engine Controls) carry the VCT solenoid and phaser procedures with their torque figures.
- Unexpected downshift into first gear — NHTSA recall 16V248000 (Ford 16S19) covers the 2012 Expedition and Navigator: the automatic could drop into first gear regardless of road speed, slowing the vehicle abruptly and risking a locked rear axle. Ford’s remedy was a powertrain control module reprogram. Section 307-01 (Automatic Transaxle/Transmission — 6R80) and Section 303-14 document the control system behind that behaviour.
- No reverse, or a dead backup lamp — NHTSA recall 12V190000 covers the 2012 Expedition and Navigator for a transmission range sensor calibrated out of specification for reverse: the transmission may not engage reverse, and the R indicator or the backup lamps may fail to light. Frequently asked questions
Does it really cover the Lincoln Navigator as well?
Yes. Ford wrote one workshop manual for the Expedition, the long-wheelbase Expedition EL and the Navigator because they are the same vehicle underneath, and the Navigator is referenced throughout. You are not buying an Expedition book with a Navigator footnote.
Will this help with a 2015 or later Expedition?
No, and it is worth being straight about it. The 2015 Expedition dropped the 5.4L Triton for the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and is documented separately. Nothing in the engine, fuel or emissions sections here applies to an EcoBoost truck, so a 2015-on owner needs the later manual.
My truck is a 2013 or 2014 but the pages are dated 2012. Is that right?
Yes. The dates on the pages are revision dates, not coverage limits. The 5.4L 3V and the 6R80 ran unchanged to the end of the generation in 2014, so the procedures, specifications and torque figures apply across all six model years.
