Description
The complete factory service and repair manual for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 Ford Explorer — 15,469 searchable pages across 157 factory service sections, the same documentation a Ford dealer technician works from, delivered the moment you pay.
About the 2020–2022 Explorer
The sixth-generation Explorer was a ground-up re-engineering rather than a restyle: Ford moved it off the front-drive platform it had used since 2011 onto the rear-drive CD6 architecture, with the engine mounted longitudinally and a ten-speed automatic behind it. That change is why this manual matters — almost nothing underneath carries over from the truck it replaced, so a 2019 manual is no help at all on a 2020 car.
Vehicles covered
Ford Explorer (sixth generation, CD6), including the ST and the hybrid
Model years: 2020, 2021, 2022
Engines documented
- 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder (turbocharged, direct injection)
- 3.0L EcoBoost V6 (twin-turbo — the ST and Platinum engine)
- 3.3L hybrid V6, with its full hybrid powertrain coverage
Transmission & drivetrain
- 10R60 ten-speed automatic transmission
- 10R80 MHT ten-speed automatic (the hybrid variant), including overhaul sections
- Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with transfer case and driveline
What’s inside
All 157 factory sections: engine mechanical and management for all three powertrains, both ten-speed transmissions, the hybrid high-voltage system, driveline and axles, brakes with anti-lock and stability control, steering and suspension, climate control, restraints, emissions, body and closures, and the full electrical suite. Diagnostics are unusually strong here — there are over 7,000 pinpoint tests and more than 900 identified connectors, with wiring diagrams and connector views throughout.
Common issues this manual helps you tackle
- Rear axle mounting bolt fracture — the defining recall of this generation, where a fractured bolt can let the driveshaft disconnect. The rear drive axle and differential sections cover the axle, its mounting, the subframe bushing and the torque figures that matter.
- 3.0L EcoBoost intake valve fracture — nickel-alloy intake valves on 2021–2022 engines can crack in service. The engine mechanical sections document the cylinder head and valvetrain in full.
- Ten-speed harsh or delayed shifts — Ford’s own procedure is a main control valve body replacement or an accelerated break-in routine depending on mileage. The transmission sections cover the valve body, solenoid characterisation and adaptive learning.
- Rear and 360-degree camera failures — a long chain of software campaigns around the image processing module. The electrical and driver-information sections document the modules, their wiring and calibration.
- Driveshaft weld-seam fracture — recalled on 2020 all-wheel-drive cars. The driveline sections carry driveshaft inspection and replacement.

Frequently asked questions
Does it cover the hybrid?
Yes. The 3.3L hybrid powertrain is documented, including the 10R80 MHT transmission with its overhaul procedures.
Is the ST included?
Yes — the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 that powers the ST and Platinum has its own engine sections.
Are wiring diagrams included?
Yes, along with connector views and several thousand pinpoint tests for electrical diagnosis.
Will it help with my 2019 Explorer?
No — and this is worth being clear about. The 2020 car moved to a completely different rear-drive platform, so a 2011–2019 Explorer needs the earlier manual.
Which years does it fit?
2020, 2021 and 2022.
