Description

The complete factory service and repair manual for the 2008 Ford Escape, Escape Hybrid, Mercury Mariner and Mariner Hybrid — 5,649 pages across 122 documents covering 111 factory service sections, delivered as one searchable PDF. These are the same procedures, specifications and torque figures a dealer technician works from, available to download the moment you check out.

About the 2008 Escape

2008 is the first year of the restyled second-generation Escape, and it is a substantially different vehicle from the 2007 that came before it — new squared-off sheetmetal, an entirely redesigned interior and dashboard, and reworked suspension and steering tuning. It is also the last year of the original powertrain lineup, with the 2.3L Duratec four and the 200-horsepower 3.0L V6 both still working through a four-speed automatic. The Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid ran alongside them on the 2.3L Atkinson-cycle engine and an electronically controlled CVT, and the factory documentation treats them as full vehicles rather than an appendix — the high-voltage traction battery, the converter-inverter, motor-electronics cooling and the hybrid climate and emissions systems all get their own sections.

Vehicles covered

Ford Escape, Ford Escape Hybrid, Mercury Mariner and Mercury Mariner Hybrid
Model year: 2008

Engines documented

  • 2.3L Duratec four-cylinder
  • 3.0L Duratec four-valve V6
  • 2.3L Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder — Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid

Transmission & drivetrain

  • CD4E four-speed automatic transaxle
  • eCVT electronically controlled continuously variable transaxle on the hybrid
  • Five-speed manual transaxle
  • Front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, with the Power Transfer Unit, driveshaft and rear drive axle differential

What’s inside

111 factory service sections spanning the whole vehicle: general information, identification codes, the maintenance schedule, and jacking and lifting; engine mechanical, electronic engine controls, fuel charging, ignition, intake and emission control, documented separately for the 2.3L, the 3.0L (4V) and the hybrid; engine cooling and exhaust; the CD4E automatic, the eCVT, the manual transaxle and clutch, the four-wheel-drive system, the Power Transfer Unit, halfshafts and rear drive axle differential; front and rear disc brakes, drum brakes, hydraulic and power brake actuation, the parking brake, and the vehicle dynamic systems sitting on top of them; power steering, the steering column, linkage and system; front and rear suspension, wheels and tires; climate control for both the conventional and hybrid cars; supplemental restraints and safety belts; the high-voltage traction battery and converter-inverter; the module communications network, module configuration and the multifunction electronic modules; the full body group from closures and body repairs through glass, latches, trim, seating, bumpers and the uni-body subframe; and the electrical sections covering exterior and interior lighting, the instrument cluster, entertainment, parking aid, wipers, horn and the passive anti-theft system.

Wiring is genuinely included here, which is worth stating plainly because most manuals only cross-reference it. This download carries two dedicated wiring diagram volumes — one for the Escape and Mariner, one for the Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid — with the circuit diagrams, connector views and component locations the service procedures point at.

Common issues this manual helps you tackle

  • Loss of electric power steering assist — NHTSA campaign 14V284000 (Ford 14S05) covered 740,878 Escapes and Mariners built for 2008 through 2011. The steering torque sensor can fail to read driver input and the electric power steering system removes assist, leaving heavy steering at low speed. Ford’s remedy was power steering control module and instrument cluster software, with component replacement where the fault history warranted it. The Power Steering, Steering System and Steering Column sections carry the diagnostics and the removal procedures, and Module Configuration covers the reprogramming side.
  • Hybrid motor-electronics coolant pump failure — NHTSA campaign 14V526000 recalled around 70,000 Escape and Mariner Hybrids from 2005 through 2008 because the motor electronics coolant pump can fail, overheating the hybrid electronics and shutting the powertrain down in a stall-like condition. The fix was a brushless replacement pump. Engine Cooling — Hybrid documents that cooling loop, and High Voltage Converter Inverter and High Voltage Traction Battery cover the components it exists to protect.
  • CD4E automatic losing second and fourth gear — the best-documented mechanical failure on this car, typically surfacing near 98,000 miles as hard shifts, slipping, a wrench light and limp mode at roughly 20 mph. The usual finding is band failure, often with valve body trouble alongside it. Transmission — CD4E covers the overhaul, the valve body and the band and servo specifications, while Transmission Cooling — CD4E and Transmission External Controls — CD4E cover the cooler circuit and the shift linkage.
  • Electronic throttle body surging and stalling — NHTSA opened a defect investigation into throttle failures across 2005 to 2012 Escapes, some 1.6 million vehicles, with owners reporting surge under acceleration and stalls both at speed and at rest, logging P2111 and P2112 for a throttle actuator stuck open or stuck closed. Fuel Charging and Controls and Electronic Engine Controls for your engine carry the throttle body, the actuator and the pinpoint tests; Acceleration Control covers the pedal end of the system.
  • Blower motor resistor and blend door actuator faults — heat or cooling that only works on the top fan speeds, cabin temperature that changes on its own, and clicking or buzzing from behind the dash. Both are inexpensive parts behind an awkward job, which is exactly where a factory teardown sequence earns its money. Climate Control and Climate Control System give the case teardown and actuator locations, with Climate Control System – Hybrid and Auxiliary Climate Control — Hybrid for the hybrid cars.
  • Front-end knock and ABS warning lights — worn stabilizer bar links knocking over bumps, and cracked ABS tone rings setting the ABS and traction control lights with erratic behavior. Front Suspension covers the links and bushings, Front Drive Halfshafts covers the tone ring on the shaft, and Vehicle Dynamic Systems covers the anti-lock and stability diagnostics that read it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this a single model year?
Because 2008 is exactly where the hardware changes. For 2009 the four-cylinder grew from 2.3L to 2.5L, the V6 was reworked from 200 to 240 horsepower, and the four-speed automatic was replaced by the 6F35 six-speed. A 2009 or later Escape needs different engine, transmission and control documentation, so stretching this listing across those years would be a false claim. What you get instead is the 2008 book, complete and undiluted.

Does it cover the hybrid?
Fully. The Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid have their own engine, cooling, emissions, climate and electronic control sections, plus the high-voltage traction battery, the converter-inverter, the eCVT, and a wiring diagram volume of their own.

Is the Mercury Mariner included?
Yes. The Mariner and Mariner Hybrid are the same vehicle as the Escape and Escape Hybrid, and the factory documentation covers them together rather than as separate books.

Are wiring diagrams really included?
Yes — two complete wiring diagram volumes, one for the conventional cars and one for the hybrids. It is worth checking on any manual you buy, because a workshop manual on its own usually just points at the wiring cells by number and leaves you to find them.

Can I actually search it?
Yes. The documents carry a real text layer, so you can search a trouble code, a component name or a torque figure across the set rather than paging through 5,649 pages by eye.
